Our Program
The program is based on a dual language development model. Instruction takes place in an integrated educational environment that promotes bilingualism for students in the program.
Reading and writing are taught in Spanish with a gradual transition to reading and writing in the second language that does not affect the development of the first language. Science, social studies, math and health are taught in both languages. Music, art, and physical education are taught in English.
The Staff
Teachers and support staff are highly qualified, skilled, committed professionals. They represent a broad combination of experiences that enable them to work effectively as a team to meet the needs of all the students at Barnes Elementary.
How Your Child Can Participate
Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, Barnes became Beaverton’s only school-wide Billingual Program serving students PreK to 5th Grade. Barnes’ program is “dual language” because it provides the same academic content and standards as any other elementary school in the Beaverton School District. Still, the students learn in Spanish for a minimum of 50% of the day. As part of a pre-K-12th grade pathway, students become bilingual, bi-literate, and bicultural. Studying in two languages has proven to help all students achieve higher academic levels in both English and Spanish.
